Achtung: Die Zahlen beruhen zum Teil auf Schätzungen; vor allem für Zentral- und südliches Afrika. Insbesondere die Bestandszahlen in Congo, Gabon, Botswana und Zimbabwe sind auch unter Fachleuten immer noch umstritten. Abweichungen von anderen Bestandszahlen beruhen auf unterschiedlichen Erhebungsmethoden und Interpretationen.
